Legends of Science
Thitapally Joseph Job Thitapally Joseph Job

Thitapally, Joseph Job obtained his DSc from the University of Madras in 1941. He specialized in oceanography, pisciculture, and fisheries technology. He systemized a unique scheme of 'Public health fish farming.' He estimated the efficiency of larvicidal and cyclopsidal fishes in the control of 'water-borne' diseases. He also worked on water-manuring and the culture of aquatic and semi-aquatic vegetables, which helped to utilize all cultivable waters for food production. Dr. Job was Assistant Regional Fisheries Officer for Asia and the Far East, FAO, United Nations (1951-56). He was a Fellow of the Zoological Society of India and the Academy of Zoologists of India.

Janakiraman Ramchandran Janakiraman Ramchandran

Janakiraman Ramchandran received his Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of California, Berkley, in 1962. He carried out extensive studies on ACTH and other tropic hormones. He did extensive research on the structure and function of polypeptide hormones of the pituitary and the molecular basis of transmembrane signaling through cell surface receptors and ion channels. He spearheaded the development of highly selective neuronal calcium channel antagonists derived from the venoms of marine, fish-eating cone snails. Dr. Ramchandran was a member of the Scientific and Technical Advisory Committee on Tropical Diseases Research for the WHO. He was a Member of the Indian Academy of Sciences (1988).
