Legends of Science
Govindasamy Shanmugam Govindasamy Shanmugam

Govindasamy Shanmugam, doctorate from Regional Research Laboratory, Hyderabad was an internationally recognized Cancer Biologist. He worked on the synthesis and assembly of adenoviruses and moloney murine leukemia virus. His group isolated two potential anticancer compounds, Cleistanthin A and Cleistanthus B, from a poisonous plant and presented that both compounds induced DNA damage, growth arrest, and apoptosis in cancer cells. Dr. Shanmugam was conferred with the ICMR Award in Biomedical Sciences and he was the recipient of INSA Senior Scientist Award. He was an elected fellow of the INSA, New Delhi, Indian Academy of Sciences, Bengaluru, and National Academy of Sciences, India (Allahabad).

Satya Narain Singh Satya Narain Singh

Satya Narain Singh, DSc from the University of London, UK, was a pioneer in helminths, worked on nematodes and trematodes, adding many new taxa, parasitic mainly in birds and mammals. He was the first to show (1958) that the dermatitis in the ears of buffaloes in Andhra Pradesh is caused by Stepahanofilaria. Since then his main interest centered round filarial worms. He described many genera of nematode parasites of birds, such as Buckley fielaria and Lerouxinema and a large number of species new to science. Dr. Singh was the recipient of Dr. Bhalerao Memorial Gold Medal in 1969 and Sir Dorab Tata Gold Medal in 1968. He was elected Fellow of the Zoological Society of India and Helminthological Society of India.
