Legends of Science
Rudolf Ludwig Carl Virchow Sahay Ram Bose

Sahay Ram Bose obtained his PhD from the University of Kolkata. He specialized in Mycology. His research was on Polyporaceae, described 143 species of these. He studied ant fungi from termite nest found in islands of Chilika Lake. While studying nitrogen fixation in some species of trees, he discovered that Phoma casuarinae does not fix nitrogen directly from air. Dr. Bose attempted to isolate an antibiotic Polyporin simillar to Penicillin from Polypores Sanguineous. He was Director of CNRS, France from 1957-59. Later he was Professor at School of Tropical Medicine, Kolkata. Dr. Bose was a Fellow of Royal Society of Edinburgh. He was Vice-President, Mycology Section of International Botanical Congress, Stockholm.

Andreas Vesalius Bharat Bhushan Chattoo

Bharat Bhushan Chattoo obtained his PhD in Microbial Genetics from University of Delhi in 1976. His specialization was in the fields of Biotechnology, Genomics and Proteomics. He successfully expressed therapeutic proteins of pharmaceutical interest such as Hepatitis B Surface antigen and human epidermal Growth Factor in non-conventional yeasts. He was responsible for establishment of Sri Mata Vaishno Devi University, Jammu, residential and highly technical University. He established a Cluster Innovation Centre to encourage the interface of industry and entrepreneurship in Gujarat. He was awarded the Rockfeller Foundation Biotechnology Career Fellowship, STA fellowship from Japan Science and Technology Corporation. He was a member of Genetics Society of America, Review Panel of Indo-Swedish Collaboration in Biotechnology.
