Legends of Science
Debi Prasad Sarkar Debi Prasad Sarkar

Dr. Debi Prasad Sarkar, an immunologist, biochemist, and virologist obtained his Ph.D. from Kolkata University in 1986. Sarkar's research on Sendai virus is known to have resulted in the development of reconstituted viral envelopes containing only the fusion protein. This is reported to have assisted in a more efficient gene delivery in therapeutic use. He was the elected fellow of the National Academy of Sciences in 1996; the Indian Academy of Sciences in 2007, and the Indian National Science Academy in 2011. He was the recipient of the SS Bhatnagar Award in 1998; M. Sreenivasya Memorial Award of the Society of Biological Chemists in 2005.

Krishnaswamy Vijayraghavan Krishnaswamy Vijayraghavan

Krishnaswamy Vijayraghavan obtained his Ph.D. from the TIFR in 1983. His significant contribution is to developmental biology, genetics, and neurogenetics. His research focused on the principles and mechanisms that control the nervous system and muscles during development and how these neuromuscular systems direct locomotor behaviors. Dr. Vijayraghavan is a member of the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology board of governors. He is an elected fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences and a Foreign Associate of the US National Academy of Sciences. He received the SS Bhatnagar Award in 1998; Padma Shri in 2013; JC Bose award in 2006.
