Legends of Science
Joseph Thomas Joseph Thomas

Joseph Thomas obtained his Ph.D. from the University of Mumbai in 1962. His research interest was in biological nitrogen fixation and biotechnology. He established that heterocysts of cyanobacteria are the site of nitrogen fixation. He pioneered the use of radioactive nitrogen and demonstrated the glutamine synthase-glutamate synthase pathway in microbes and plants. His other significant contributions were the mechanisms of salt tolerance, sodium transport metabolism, and organization of nif genes in cyanobacteria, biochemical characterization of glutamine synthetases, and legume-Rhizobium interactions. He established the Centre for Biotechnology at SPIC Science Foundation, Chennai. Dr. Thomas received the FICCI award (1991-1992). He was elected Fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences, Bangalore; National Academy of Agricultural Sciences, New Delhi

Jnanendra Nath Ray Jnanendra Nath Ray

Jnanedra Nath Ray received his DSc from the University of Manchester, the UK, in 1934. He contributed significantly to the fields of pharmacology and organic chemistry. He did pioneering work on alkaloids, anesthetics, and chromatography. He was the Technical Adviser to the Government of India and was involved in planning the first five-year plan. He was the President Indian Science Congress(1937); elected fellow of the Indian Chemical Society and Royal Institute of Chemistry, London.

Do You Know?

In 1967, Targets in uterine tissue were identified that interact specifically with estrogen. This finding was the first step that led to the detection of estrogen receptors in breast cancers and the design of specific and effective therapies for hormone-dependent breast cancer.

Development of a potential microRNA medicine against KRAS mutant cancers

11 October 2022, EurekAlert

The chemically modified microRNA143 that scientists have developed is not readily degraded, remaining stable in mouse blood, and it suppresses the expression of several key genes in the KRAS signaling network, thereby disabling the KRAS signaling network and inducing cell death at extremely low doses in cancer...

Scientists identify link between mitochondria and pancreatic cancer risk

12 October 2022, MedicalXpress

The mitochondria is a key energy-producing component of the human cell that plays an important role in cancer cell metabolism...

Immunotherapy before surgery appears effective for some with melanoma

12 October 2022, National Cancer Institute

With the tumor in place when those first doses of pembrolizumab are given, the drug can dramatically increase the number of T cells capable of recognizing and attacking the tumor...
