Dharani Dhar Awasthi
Dharani Dhar Awasthi obtained his PhD from Lucknow University in 1947. His primary topic of research was Lichenology. His pioneering research was on Lichen flora and many specimens in India and European herbaria. He built up a comprehensive herbarium making information available to many students. Several Lichen species were named in his honour. He has revised more than 70 genera of Lichens and described more than 75 species. He was an elected fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences and the Indian National Science Academy. He was awarded the Acharius Medal of the International Association of Lichenology (1992).

Sisir Kumar Mitra
Sisir Kumar Mitra received his DSc from the University of Kolkata in 1919. His research involved the diffraction of monochromatic light in a single oblique slit and devising a better method for determining heliometer diffraction patterns. He was instrumental in installing the first Ionosphere field station in India. He was the recipient of Padma Bhushan in 1962. He was elected fellow of the Royal Society of London; President Asiatic Society, and President of INSA.
