Niraj Nath Das Gupta secured his Ph.D. degree from the University of London in 1938 and a DSc Degree from the University of Kalyani. He did significant work in tracer studies on the uptake of radio-iodine in thyroid diseases and on the life span of human leucocytes in leukemia. He was the first to start electron microscopic research on bacterial chromosomes and the morphology of the kala-azar parasite and Mycobacterium leprae. Dr. Das Gupta was the recipient of the Mahenralal Sirkar Research Gold Medal in 1950; the NN Dutt Memorial Medal of the Indian Medical Association in 1965, and the Prize of Chittaranjan Cancer Hospital in 1972.
