Radio Diagnosis
Head: Dr. Nitin Shetty
Overview
The Department of Radio-diagnosis comprises Diagnostic Radiology and Interventional Radiology. The services are provided by several permanent and ad-hoc staff members, senior and junior residents from the TMC Radiology family. The department provides state of the art imaging, diagnostic and interventional oncology services and is well known for its 24 x 7 commitment to patient care. The faculty of the department are specialists in their respective areas of interests. As one of the most rapidly expanding departments of ACTREC, it has garnered immense attention over the past couple of years with exponentially increasing workload and attracts qualified radiologists and technologists from different parts of the country who wish to undergo advanced training in diagnostic and interventional radiology.
Radio-diagnosis provides diagnostic imaging services including Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Computed Tomography (CT), Ultrasonography (USG) and Radiography (X- Rays). We are the first Department in the country to house a 3T MRI, and also provide imaging services in conjunction with the newly installed 1.5 T Proton MRI. We take special care for critical patients including children, and those needing ICU and ventilatory support. With the latest addition of whole body imaging, air coil and breast coil, we aim to provide state of the art MR imaging for our patients.
The 128 -slice CT caters to more than 100 patients everyday including in-patients, and also provides services to Interventional Radiology (described below). The advanced applications of CT coronary angiography and Volume rendered techniques provide exquisite imaging details for our patients.
With a total of 14 USG machines including 10 portable ones, we not only provide high quality USG imaging for our patients but also point-of-care services when required. Advanced applications like fusion guided USG, elastography, contrast enhanced and three dimensional USG not only serve as adjunct to routine imaging but also help in guiding USG guided procedures. Breast imaging including mammograms, sono-localizations, and wire localizations are day-to-day procedures done on an OPD basis in our Department. Radiography including direct digital radiography, computed radiography and bed side X-rays are available 24 x7 for our in-patients and OPD patients.
Interventional Radiology (IR) services range from guided FNACs and biopsies to complex ablations and angioembolizations. We have one single plane and one biplane digital subtraction angiography machine dedicated for vascular interventions and percutaneous fluoro-guided procedures. Apart from this we have two dedicated ultrasound machines for USG guided procedures and advanced ablation equipment for radio-frequency, microwave and cryoablations.
We specialise in fluoro-guided complex central catheter and port insertions. Ours is the first centre in the country to start intravenous arm port insertions for chemotherapy of cancer patients. Apart from pre-operative tumor devascularization and liver directed intra-arterial therapies, we also perform highly advanced ophthalmic artery chemoembolization for retinoblastoma in our pediatric patients. Recently, we have also started radial artery access (along with routine femoral artery access) for our vascular interventions.
We have our dedicated OPD in ACTREC for better evaluation of patients required IR related
services. We have dedicated beds in the in-patient wards for best possible management of
our patients.
We are also in the process of developing other services like Vacuum assisted breast
biopsies, transperineal prostate biopsies and interventions, high intensity focussed USG
interventions, percutaneous cholangioscopy, and MRI guided interventions.
Education is a part of the philosophy statement of Tata Memorial Centre. Department of Radiology stands by this. We are a part of Homi Bhabha National Institute and train students registered for M.D (Radio-diagnosis) (17 seats per year), D.M (Interventional Radiology) (4 seats per year) program & One and two -year fellowships in diagnostic and interventional oncology.
We have three weekly classes by internal and recognized national and international faculty for our MD residents. Similarly, a weekly academic session is held for our DM IR and fellowship residents with didactic lectures, journal clubs and audit sessions with participation by national and international faculty too. Monthly academic session, popularly known as IR Academic club is attended by DM and fellows in IR from all over the country. Yearly appraisal examinations are held for MD, DM and fellowship courses.
Teaching sessions are also organized weekly in the department for the technical staff which ensures continuous improvement in their theoretical and technical skills including patient safety practices in day-to-day service.
The Department of Radiology is at the forefront of research activities with more than 75 projects (completed and ongoing). The faculty of this department are involved in multiple research projects including burning topics like Artificial Intelligence, Radiation protection and Advanced groundbreaking imaging and interventional techniques.
Multiple important conferences have been organized by the department over the past year including BRIIT, 2023, Indian Cancer Conference (ICC, 2023) and SCII-CON, 2023. Apart from this many hands-on workshops are organized often including quarterly radial artery access workshops, workshop on liver directed therapies and pre-conference workshops in the major conferences discussed above. The residents are actively encouraged to present cases and participate in workshops for first-hand experience on emerging imaging and interventional techniques.
We successfully conducted SPECTRUM India, 2024, in the month of November, 2024, a landmark interventional oncology conference with multidisciplinary collaboration. The program was enriched by participation of many national and international faculty and delegates.
