Unravelling the crosstalk of distinct modes of cell-cell communication and its contribution in cancer progression

Cell-cell communication is fundamental in regulating tissue harmony and is often tweaked during cancer development and progression. Intercellular communication has been known to be mediated by secreted soluble factors, extracellular matrix components, and direct cell-cell gap-junctional signalling. However, the recent spurt of reports suggests a few additional versatile mechanisms, such as exosomes and tunnelling nanotubes (TNTs), aiding the efficacy of cellular networking. The main focus of this project is to understand the interplay of various modes of cell-cell commination under varying microenvironmental changes. The deeper understanding of which will help designing novel strategies to modulate the aberrant cell communication to control cancer progression and metastasis.
