Transplant Immunology & Immunogenetics
Officer In-charge : Dr. Meenakshi Singh
Overview
The Transplant Immunology and Immunogenetics Laboratory (TII / HLA) at ACTREC – TMC is a NABL accredited laboratory with state-of-the-art equipment.
The laboratory offers specialized diagnostic testing services including HLA Typing by Low and High Resolution for haematological malignancies (Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML), B/T cell -Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemias (B-ALL/T-ALL), Chronic Myeloid Leukemia (CML), Chronic lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL), Myelodysplastic syndromes/Myeloproliferative neoplasms (MDS/MPN), Chronic Myelomonocytic Leukemia (CMML), Multiple Myeloma (MM) and Lymphomas). Additionally, KIR Genotyping and HLA Antibody Screening assays are also offered in order to select a suitable donor for Haploidentical Hematopoietic Stem cell Transplants. The lab also facilitates in identifying HLA matched and epitope matched platelet donors for patients with platelet refractoriness. Diagnostic HLA testing services for disease associations, drug hypersensitivity, and recurrent pregnancy loss are also under the test scope of the laboratory. The laboratory accepts requests for all the above diagnostic tests from all the TMC centres as well as other referral laboratories within the country.
The Laboratory ensures high accuracy of reporting by participating in External Quality Assessment program(EQAS) with All India Institute of Medical Sciences(AIIMS) and Inter-lab comparison program with MGUMST, Jaipur.
The laboratory staff is a highly skilled team of Scientific Officers, Scientific Assistants, and Administrative staff.

- Single Antigen Bead based assay using Luminex technology for C3d complement binding antibody [C3d Single Allele Antibody Class I & II]
In addition to the services described above for transplant patients, HLA testing for the following conditions are also performed:
- Platelet transfusion support: Patients with low platelet counts are at risk for serious bleeding complications and are often transfused with platelets from healthy donors. However, patients can sometimes produce antibodies to the HLA molecules expressed on platelets, which reduce the effectiveness of platelet transfusion. HLA typing and antibody detection help physicians choose a platelet donor that will result in increased platelet counts for patients in need.
The lab accepts referral samples for HLA typing, KIR genotyping and HLA antibody screening from hospitals within the country. The requirements for sending the samples are as follows: HLA Typing and KIR Genotyping: Blood sample for HLA typing and KIR genotyping must be collected in EDTA or Sodium Citrate vacutainers 10 ml (2.5 ml x 4 tubes) peripheral blood. HLA Antibody screening blood sample must be collected in a single plain tube (5 ml peripheral blood).
Please ensure that the samples reach the TII Lab, ACTREC, within 72 hours of collection All collected samples should be sent along with the clinicians request on their respective hospital’s letterhead and the filled sample transportation form to HLA OPD, located at Room no. 307, Shanti Sadan Building, ACTREC, Kharghar between 2.30pm to 4.00pm, from Monday to Friday (Except public holidays).
Please find below the Sample transportation form to be sent with all transported samples. It is mandatory to fill the name of patient/donor, location of collection, phlebotomist name, sign with the collection date & time.
Our department is part of the Homi Bhabha National Institute and offers a range of comprehensive educational programs, including:
- Fellowship Programs:One-year Advanced training in Transplant Immunology & Immunogenetics is designed to provide candidates with theoretical as well as hands on experience in the areas of transplant immunogenetics. The fellowship program is advertised on the website www.tmc.gov.in.
- MScDissertation: The lab offers 3-6 months (short term) research projects to students in the final year of their post-graduation degree in LifeSciences/Biotechnology/Immunology
- Observers:The lab conducts 15 days to 1-month Observership to medical post-graduates, scientists, science undergraduates, graduates and post-graduates from India and from other countries
The information regarding dissertation and observership can be sought from the Academic Cell for Clinical Services. Contact Tel: 022 6873 5000. (Ext. 5730). Email ID : tii.hla@actrec.gov.in
The laboratory is involved in various research projects in collaboration with the Bone Marrow transplant unit, ACTREC. The research area is broadly focused on the different aspects of Transplant Immunology & Immunogenetics in relation to various hemato-lymphoid and solid organ transplants.
The lab also focuses on translational research using molecular, proteomics, etc. in developing Lab-to-Clinic oriented novel assays with implications in the diagnosis and prognosis of transplant patients resulting in better treatment outcomes and patient care. Pharmacogenomics and disease association in relation to HLA is also being explored.
Recently, the lab has forayed into the area of Immunotherapy, by successfully generating Virus specific T cells (R & D grade) which could be used to treat patients with common post-transplant infections such as AdV, CMV and EBV. Basic research focused on NK cell cytotoxicity with a probability of developing novel CAR-NK immunotherapy products is also being undertaken.
These projects have been funded by Terry Fox Cancer foundation, DBT-BIRAC and intramural grants. The laboratory has regular publications in national and international peer reviewed journals.
The lab participated in the following components of the workshop:
- Population genetics, anthropology and evolution
For this component, the lab performed high resolution (NGS) HLA typing for 11 loci in 184 unrelated healthy donors from India. A total of 25 novel alleles were observed, which have been added to the IMGT database and have been published in the peer reviewed HLA journal (Impact Factor 9.2) - High-resolution KIR in populations
As part of this component, KIR high resolution typing (NGS) was conducted for the KIR inhibitory genes in 120 unrelated healthy donors from India. This is the first data from Indian population.
