Overview

The Department of Medical Oncology comprises of the bone marrow transplant unit, adult haematolymphoid division, solid tumor and paediatric oncology. Bone marrow transplant unit at ACTREC is one of the largest in the country and performs nearly 100 transplants every year including autologous and allogeneic transplants. The first CART therapy in India was performed at the BMT unit in ACTREC on 4th June 2021. Adult haematolymphoid division is involved in the management of adults with hematological malignancies while solid oncology services provide medical management to adult patients with solid tumours. Paediatric oncology unit is involved in the management of children with hematological and solid malignancies. Joint clinics are an integral part of the treatment process and are undertaken in collaboration with faculty from pathology, radiology, surgery and radiation oncology to provide comprehensive care to our patients. The department also manages a 14-hour day-care for administration of chemotherapy, immunotherapy, blood and blood products and 24-hour casualty services to manage oncological emergencies. Apart from clinical services, the department provides training to senior residents pursuing DM in Medical Oncology and to fellows in the field of bone marrow transplantation. Research forms an important part of the department’s vision. Priority research areas are identifying novel compounds and low-cost solutions for management of malignancies and strategies to mitigate complications of conventional chemotherapy drugs and bone marrow transplantation. Our mission is to provide comprehensive evidence-based care to our patients, to train physicians in oncology and to carry out research relevant to the Indian setting.
